This project is more than just a custom motorcycle; it is a build with a personal mission. I am transforming a classic into a rugged explorer for the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR) to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health.
The Foundation: A Gift from Bob
Every great story has a beginning. Mine started when Bob Dorrestein generously handed me the keys to a Honda CX500. Known for its bulletproof “V-twin” engine, it’s the perfect platform for me to create something that can handle both the dapper streets of the DGR and the dust of the backroads.
I asked Bob to name the Adventure CX500 and he has chosen “Silver Shadow” as its new name.
My Vision: The Adventure Conversion
I’m not just restoring this bike; I am reinventing it. My goal is to create a one-of-a-kind Adventure CX500. I am getting inspiration from Brickhouse Builds videos where he showed us all how you can transform a CX500 into something even cooler (https://youtu.be/GGxBqS0R-oI?si=7pvmMCws3jm7Xc98) To get there, I am attemping to overhaul nearly every component:
- Handling & Stance: I am going to install a modified FT500 front fork, extended YSS shocks, and use first-gen Comstar rims wrapped in aggressive knobby tires.
- Protection: I am going to add a custom-made skidplate, heavy-duty crash bars, and a KTM front fender.
- Cockpit & Lighting: I am going to choose XT500 handlebars, modify the gauges, and redesign the headlight setup with high-output floodlights.
- Electronics: I am going to integrate modern LED blinkers, brake/running lights, and an upgraded radiator cover.
- Touring Ready: I am going to hand-build the seat pan and seat, add a custom baggage rack, and modify the side stand to accommodate the new height.
The Artisan Details
I wanted this build to have unique touches you won’t find anywhere else. This includes a custom DGR special fuse cover and unique radiator cover inserts, both meticulously crafted for me by K.I. Hestad.

The Ultimate Goal: Selling for Charity
In the end, I’m not building this bike for myself. Once the CX500 is complete, I am going to sell it for charity. The total proceeds, minus my build costs, will be donated directly to the DGR to support their vital work for men’s health. Want to see the final result of all this hard work in person? You can!
